Pilates for Dancers: Sally Anderson & Kristy

“Over the years I have found no better method for directly
training dance skills as well as enhancing integrated
movement, control and balance. When utilised consistently,
the benefits of undertaking the pilates method are
extraordinary. “ Sally Anderson
Part I – Conditioning and Preparing the Dancer
Learn a full Pilates sequence that you can take with you
anywhere to maintain and increase condition, warm up
and prepare you for class, rehearsal or performance.
This sequence offers you the opportunity to change the
way you control your body through movement.
Part II – Training Dance Specific Skills
We will look at specific positions and movements that
are consistently required of a dancer and learn pilates
sequences that will enhance execution, positioning and
ability to sustain. We will discuss joint positioning for
developes in all positions, arabesques, muscle
sequencing for a range of movements including grand
ronds, and training your jumps and beats.
Participants will go away with an extensive range of
information and specific practical skills to use
themselves or to impart to students.
The Pilates Method has a particularly appropriate
application for dancers, with Joseph Pilates having
worked extensively on conditioning and rehabilitating
dancers with his work whilst continuing to develop and
extend his method. Joe and Clara Pilates were renowned
for teaching annually at the modern dance retreat
Jacobs Pillow, where they instilled the concepts and
principles of “contrology” into the dancers of the day.
